Nisbet receives 2004 Theresa A. Herb Excellence in Education Award

Tara Nisbet, a staff nurse in hematology and oncology at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, is the recipient of the 2004 Theresa A. Herb Excellence in Education Award, recognizing nursing contributions to patient and staff education.

Theresa A. Herb, director of nursing education and professional development at Penn State Hershey Medical Center, for whom the award is named, presented the award and a certificate to Nisbet, along with $200 for Nisbet to use for a continuing education program of her choice. In addition, Nisbet's name is inscribed on a plaque that hangs within the medical center.

Nisbet is recognized for her efforts to promote educational opportunities and improve patient care. Nominated by Andrea Quickel, Nisbet is described as "an excellent role model and preceptor and an inspiration to other staff nurses caring for oncology patients." She recently created educational binders for new staff members with information specific to the unit. She also instituted a monthly study group at her home to further educate nurses on hematology and oncology issues.

Other nominees for the annual award included Christine Bouch, staff nurse, acute care surgery, fifth floor; Jeanmarie Bowman, staff nurse, Surgical Intensive Care Unit; Jolene Grosso, staff nurse, pediatrics; Patricia Monk, staff nurse, acute care medicine, sixth floor; and Christina Webster, clinical head nurse, acute care surgery, fourth floor.

The annual Theresa A. Herb Excellence in Education Award was established in 1997, and is funded by personal contributions from members of nursing education and professional development. Nominees for the award must use education to demonstrate improvement in clinical practice; demonstrate critical thinking in clinical practice; demonstrate leadership in enhancing patient and staff education; display creative methods for educating staff and patients; and have a willingness to share expertise in practice.
