Popular Penn State Alumni Association license plates get makeover

University Park, Pa. -- Pennsylvania's most successful affinity license plate program is taking on a new look. The Penn State Alumni Association this month unveiled the new Penn State license plate, available only to members of the Alumni Association.

With more than 15,000 registered plates on Pennsylvania highways, Penn State boasts the state's largest special organization plate program. Penn State started its license-plate program in 1986, making it the first university to have an affinity license plate.

The new plate features the shield from the University mark, replacing the lion face that has appeared on the plate since 1986. The new image is consistent with the graphic identity system of the University and the Alumni Association. In addition, the full name of the organization -- Penn State Alumni Association -- now appears across the bottom of the license plate.

Along with the visual redesign, the plate program also has undergone a change, with proceeds directly benefiting Penn State students. The new plates are available at a one-time cost of $72.50. Of this amount, $22.50 is paid directly to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation for the plate, while the remaining $50 is a 100 percent tax-deductible gift that funds vital student programs including the Blue & White Society and Lion Ambassadors.

In addition to Pennsylvania, Penn State Alumni Association plates are available in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

With more than 152,000 members, the Penn State Alumni Association is the world's largest dues-paying alumni organization. Founded in 1870, the Alumni Association connects alumni to the University and to each other; provides valued services to members; and supports the University's mission of teaching, research and service.
