Famed cake decorator to share knowledge with Penn College students, public

Daniel Budiman, cake decorator and editor of Here Comes the Cake magazine, will work with students and conduct a demonstration for the public during a visit from April 20 to 22 at Pennsylvania College of Technology. Budiman will work with students in the School of Hospitality during five hands-on, cake-decorating sessions, and he'll conduct a cake-decorating demonstration for alumni and the public from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 20.

During the demonstration, to be held in B132 Hager Lifelong Education Center on the main campus, Budiman will decorate a tiered wedding cake with rolled fondant and gum-paste flowers and address how to market and sell wedding cakes. This is a return trip for Budiman, who also visited Penn College in 2001 to work with students.

Budiman is the chief executive officer of CalJava International, based in Northridge, Calif., which distributes cake-decorating supplies to bakeries, caterers, distributors and cake and candy supply stores worldwide. Budiman founded CalJava International in 1985, and its first venture was a full-line retail bakery in West Hills, Calif. It eventually was converted to a specialty cake store, which earned fame for its unique designs.

After selling the bakeries, CJI went full-speed with manufacturing and today has the world's largest selection of ready-to-use gum-paste flowers for cake decoration. CJI undertook another venture in 2004, when Budiman began to publish Here Comes the Cake.

In January, Budiman expanded the company's horizons again by offering classes through the CalJava International School of Cake Decorating and Sugar Craft. For more information about CalJava International or Here Comes the Cake, visit http://www.cakevisions.com
