July camps and workshop offer creativity and learning

The Lehigh Valley Writing Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley is offering a variety of creative and educational summer programs in July for school-age children who will be advancing to grades two through 12 in fall 2005. Parents can enroll their children in a full-day camp experience, a half-day session, or participate in a one-day workshop July 18-29.

The full-day camp experience
Spend the morning hours expressing your creative writing side and the afternoons soaking up the sun while swimming, hiking and participating in camp activities at the Neff's Campground. A collaborative effort of the Lehigh Valley Writing project and the Allentown YMCA's Camp Discovery, this summer camp runs from 9 a.m. through 4 p.m. Monday through Friday from July 18-29 for children entering grades four through six. Extended-care hours are available from 4-6 p.m. The full-day camp fee is $325; if opting for the extended hours the cost is an additional $45.

The half-day camp experience
Three half-day camps are being offered at the Penn State Lehigh Valley Corporate Learning Center in Bethlehem for two weeks running from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday from July 18-29. The cost for any of the half-day camps is $170. The summer programs are:

-- Author Adventures: Children entering grades two and three will become authors and create their own books as they focus on reading, writing and learning about their favorite authors.

-- Creative Composers: Children entering grades four through six will use their imagination as they enter a world of fantastic fictional fun and explore their fictional story-writing capabilities.

-- College-Bound: Students entering grades 10 through 12 will concentrate on sharpening their skills in preparing for college as they explore different writing styles, writing essays for college applications and writing for the new written portion of the SATs.

Saturday Fun Workshop
These half-day programs are held at Penn State Lehigh Valley for a parent and child to attend together. The programs run from 9 a.m. to noon at a cost of $35, which covers both parent and child. A $10 per person fee is charged for each additional family member.

-- Crafty Creations, July 16: This workshop combines a little bit of reading and writing and whole lot of creativity in making some exciting art projects.

-- Tuning into Writing. July 30: This workshop will look at how music lyrics can help develop writing skills.
