Penn State to hold summer commencement ceremonies Aug. 13

University Park, Pa. -- Penn State will hold its 2005 summer commencement ceremonies at University Park on Saturday, Aug. 13, for 2,107 total graduating students.

An estimated four associate, 1,285 baccalaureate and 818 graduate degree students will be recognized at the ceremonies, over which Penn State President Graham B. Spanier will preside.

The associate and baccalaureate ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. in The Bryce Jordan Center, and The Graduate School ceremony will begin at 2:30 p.m. also in The Bryce Jordan Center.

Throughout the Penn State system, an estimated 174 will graduate with associate degrees, 1,554 with baccalaureate degrees and 1,045 with graduate degrees, for a systemwide total of 2,773 summer graduates.

President Spanier will address the graduating undergraduate students, and Harry R. Allcock, Evan Pugh Professor of Chemistry at Penn State, will speak at the graduate ceremony.

In addition to the main commencement ceremonies, the Schreyer Honors College (SHC) will recognize about 50 graduating seniors during its medals ceremony on Friday, Aug. 12, at 5 p.m. in Presidents Hall at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel.

President Spanier will provide the welcome remarks and Executive Vice President and Provost Rodney Erickson will present student awards, assisted by SHC Dean Cheryl Achterberg.

This year's SHC summer commencement speaker is Penn State Trustee Emeritus Lloyd Huck, who was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1977 and re-elected for four succeeding terms through 1992. He was given the status of Trustee Emeritus in September 1992.
