Faculty to kick off popular home football lecture series on Sept. 3

'Huddle with the Faculty' to begin 12th season

University Park, Pa. -- Football Saturday mornings at Penn State are more than just tailgates and Tostitos, as the popular "Huddle with the Faculty" lecture series begins its 12th season at 10 a.m. Sept. 3 at The Nittany Lion Inn with a presentation on learning and mastering sports skills.

The free lecture series will be kicked off with a lecture by Denise St. Pierre, Penn State's women's golf coach and lecturer in the College of Health and Human Development, who will discuss "How You Learn and the Process of Mastering Skills in Sport." St. Pierre's discussion will focus how important it is for each person to understand his or her own learning style and how different styles of practicing impact success in sports.

The rest of the "Huddle with the Faculty" lineup features a wide range of topics from genetically modified foods to investor psychology to the future of space travel. The complete schedule is:

-- Sept. 10: "The Mustang: Part of the American Heritage or Rangeland Burden?" by Nancy Kate Diehl, assistant professor of equine science, College of Agricultural Sciences;

-- Sept. 17: "Genetically Modified Foods: Monsters or Miracles?" by Nina Fedoroff, Evan Pugh professor of biology and Willaman professor of life sciences in the Eberly College of Science;

-- Oct. 1: "Non-traditional Casting: Behind the Scenes in Film and Television" by Charles Dumas, associate professor of theater and African and African-American studies, College of Arts and Architecture;

-- Oct. 8: "Investor Psychology and the Value of Investment Advice" plus a field trip to tour the new Business Building and Trading Room with J. Randall Woolridge, professor of finance, director of the Smeal College Trading Room, president of the Nittany Lion Fund and The Goldman, Sachs and Frank P. Smeal endowed University Fellow in the Smeal College of Business;

-- Oct. 29: "Ready, Set ... Go? Are We Ready for a Human Trip to Mars?" by James Pawelczyk, associate professor of physiology, kinesiology and medicine in the College of Health and Human Development;

-- Nov. 5: "Music and Identity: For the Glory of Old State, Raise the Song" featuring Penn State Glee Club members with Christopher Kiver, assistant professor of music and director of the Penn State Glee Club in the College of Arts and Architecture.

The start time for the one-hour "Huddle with the Faculty" on each home football Saturday is 9 a.m., but is pushed back to 10 a.m. when the football game kicks off at 3 p.m. or later. Each "Huddle with the Faculty" also features a complimentary continental breakfast beginning one-half hour before the lecture start time and free parking at the Nittany Parking Deck, adjacent to The Nittany Lion Inn.

"Huddle with the Faculty" is an outreach service of the Penn State Alumni Association and is co-sponsored by The Nittany Lion Inn, Penn State Bookstore and Penn State Press.
