World Aids Day at University Park to educate and commemorate

University Park, Pa. -- More than 27 million men, women and children have already died of AIDS worldwide. Currently, 40.3 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS and more than three million people have died of AIDS-related illnesses in 2005. From Dec. 1-3, Penn State's Global AIDS Initiative, in collaboration with campus and community groups, will mark World AIDS Day with a number of campus events.

World AIDS Day 2005 is an effort to promote AIDS education and awareness, pay tribute to AIDS victims, and provide the tools and resources necessary for students, educators and community members to make an impact in the fight against AIDS. The objective of the events is to enhance student life by providing information concerning both the local and global dimensions of the AIDS epidemic. The events will focus on emphasizing the impact of AIDS and highlighting advancements occurring at Penn State, nationally and internationally.

Events include:

Thursday, Dec. 1:
-- AIDS Quilt display, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., HUB-Robeson Center's Heritage Hall

-- Interactive multicultural displays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall
Participating groups include College Democrats, Rescue Childhood, Africa In Focus, Association for India's Development, Project Haiti, Camp Dream Catcher, The ONE Campaign, HIV/AIDS Risk Reduction Advisory Council, Alpha Nu Omega and the Health and Human Development Student Council.

-- Nomo dance performance, 3:30 p.m., HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall

-- Speaker Carolyn Jenkins-Pineda, 7:30 p.m., Schwab Auditorium
Presented by Alpha Nu Omega, Jenkins-Pineda will give her personal testimony to her 20-plus years living with AIDS.

Friday and Saturday, Dec. 2-3:
-- AIDS Quilt display, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., HUB-Robeson Center's Alumni Hall
