Heard on Campus: Marvin Hamlisch at the Forum

"The arts are going through a tough time. I don't even mean financially. I'm talking about something bigger than that. I'm talking about where the arts are on the totem pole when it comes to the American philosophical / political world. You could build a hundred soccer stadiums and somehow you find the money for them, but go for one extra piano and oh boy, that's asking a lot. In my opinion you can have both… I think there has to be balance. It just bothers me that every time something gets cut from the budget in the United States, the first thing to is the arts -- as if somehow we are not going to pay a price for that. We are going to pay a price for that. We are paying a price for that right now. That price is going to continue to be higher the more we sweep this under the rug."

-- Marvin Hamlisch, legendary composer and Pittsburgh pops principal conductor, speaking Wednesday (March 29) on "My Life in Music," at the The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel on the Penn State University Park campus as part of the Faculty Staff Club Forum. Hamlisch and members of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra are at Penn State this week participating in residency activities for the College of Arts and Architecture.
