Summer youth writing camps offered

The Lehigh Valley Writing Project is sponsoring a summer youth camp program through Penn State Lehigh Valley for children interested in exploring creative writing. Students need to be advancing to grades two through 12 in fall 2006 to participate.

Half-day sessions are offered for two weeks from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost for the camp is $170 per student. Parents registering multiple students may deduct $10 from the total fee for each additional child from the same family. An early discount of $10 also may be applied to those applications received by June 1. In addition, there is a $10 discount for those applying for two camps.

Journeys (grades two to four): Participants will experience the adventure of magical places and faraway lands by creating literary masterpieces on a journey as far as the imagination will go. July 17-28, Penn State Lehigh Valley Corporate Learning Center, Bethlehem.

You're Smarter Than You Think! (grades five to eight): Participants will discover strengths and intelligences through writing and art activities, and have fun in a relaxed and productive atmosphere. July 17-28, Penn State Lehigh Valley Corporate Learning Center, Bethlehem.

Author Adventures (grades two to three): Participants will focus on reading, writing and learning about the students' favorite authors. July 31-Aug. 11, Penn State Lehigh Valley, Fogelsville.

Creative Composers (grades four to six): Students will enter the world of fantastic fictional fun. July 31-Aug. 11, Penn State Lehigh Valley, Fogelsville.

Wanna-Be Writers (grades seven to nine): Participants will explore writing and discover a personal writing style. July 31-Aug. 11, Penn State Lehigh Valley, Fogelsville.

College-Bound (grades 10-12): Students will sharpen their skills to prepare for college writing; and write in a variety of forms including memoir, poetry, personal and expository essay. July 31-Aug. 11, Penn State Lehigh Valley, Fogelsville.

Students enrolled in a half-day camp can participate in the extended day option for the July 31-Aug. 11 camp week. Extended hours are from noon to 4 p.m. at Penn State Lehigh Valley, Fogelsville. Two programs are being offered:

Food Fanatics (grades two to six): Participants will experiment with the food groups and make exciting and colorful creations.

Web Designers (grades seven to 12): Participants will learn all the beginning steps to creating and maintaining a Web page.

All instructors for the youth camps are practicing classroom teachers and certified National Writing Project Fellows. The Lehigh Valley Writing Project at Penn State Lehigh Valley is a National Writing Project program dedicated to developing literacy and communication skills, and offers a variety of professional development programs including teacher in-service workshops, Penn State graduate credit courses, continuing education seminars and the Summer Institute.
