Help find a cure for breast cancer

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This year, more than 211,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 43,300 will die in the United States. One in eight women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. In addition, 1,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 400 will die this year. If detected early, the five-year survival rate exceeds 95 percent. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram.

Penn State Hershey Medical Center encourages public participation in the following events to support breast-cancer awareness and research.

Tanger Outlets supports Penn State Cancer Institute
Shoppers visiting the Tanger Outlet Center in Lancaster can make a difference in their community and help find a cure for breast cancer. Tanger's 13th Annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign continues through Oct. 31. Funds raised during this year's campaign will benefit Penn State Cancer Institute. Tanger shoppers can save money and help save lives in their community each time they purchase the Pink and Choose Discount Card, which is available through Oct. 31 at the Tanger Customer Service Center. For a $2 donation, shoppers receive a special discount card that they can use for an additional 10 percent to 20 percent off at participating Tanger stores nationwide.

Tanger will donate 10 percent of the value of each gift card purchased to Penn State Cancer Institute. In honor of Tanger's 25th anniversary, Tanger will increase the contribution Oct. 2 to 9 by donating 25 percent of each card purchased. Gift cards are redeemable at all Tanger Outlet Center stores coast to coast.
