Fitness Center offers martial arts and tai chi

The University Fitness Center at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine begins new sessions of martial arts and tai chi in late February for both members and nonmembers.

An eight-week martial arts training session begins Tuesday, Feb. 27. The class meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays.

The class is offered to ages 12 through adult. Training is based on the traditional martial art of tae kwon do, the Korean national sport. Other styles are incorporated as the expertise of participants and guest instructors allows.

The class costs $60 in advance or $65 at the door. The registration fee covers an adult and accompanying youth.

A six-week tai chi session begins Wednesday, Feb. 28, for beginners and more experienced learners. Beginners meet from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Prior students meet from 6 to 7:15 p.m.

The program will introduce tai chi and qigong theory and principles and also allow students to learn an entry-level, barehands form. Tai chi involves slow, gentle movements that place almost no impact on joints, yet burn 400 calories an hour.

The class costs $45 in advance or $50 at the door.
