Director sought for University Fellowships Office

The vice president and dean for Undergraduate Education announces a search for the director of the University Fellowships Office. The position will be available in March.

The University Fellowships Office promotes opportunities for Penn State students to compete successfully for major national and international awards and scholarships and provides information and resources concerning competitive scholarships. This includes early identification of potential candidates and information and advice concerning appropriate preparation, which often involves interviews, practice sessions and processes for preparing effective applications. The director assembles panels of faculty who have the appropriate expertise to make selections and nominations and to mentor candidates.

The director must keep abreast of current opportunities and selection processes and work vigorously to ensure access to all appropriate awards for Penn State students. This includes scheduling and offering informational sessions and workshops for students in appropriate disciplines or in coordination with strategically selected colleges and departments and maintaining a close liaison with academic units and the Graduate School. Additionally, the director will have responsibility for the graduate Fulbright opportunities as well as the undergraduate Fulbright award program. The director will serve the Office of Undergraduate Education on special projects as may arise and as they permit and/or pertain to the duties and interests of the director.

Candidates with a strong understanding of scholarship, a commitment to high quality undergraduate education, experience in the recognition of high academic achievement and evidence of academic mentoring are highly desired. Excellent communication, interpersonal, quantitative and organizational skills are required, as is the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies, scholarship and fellowship agencies, faculty groups, administrators and students. The director is responsible for supervising staff in the University Fellowships Office. The position is available to qualified faculty and staff. An advanced degree is desirable. This is a Fixed-Term I appointment and is expected to be a nine to 11 month position.
