Author, educator to present Oweida Lecture in Journalism Ethics

An award-winning author and respected journalism educator will present the annual Oweida Lecture in Journalism Ethics at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, in the HUB-Robeson Center Auditorium on the University Park campus at Penn State.

Thomas Kunkel, dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, will present "All the Ethics That Fit ...," a free public lecture coordinated by the College of Communications.

In his role at Maryland, Kunkel serves as president of American Journalism Review, a national magazine published by the college. He also has served as as director of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism and as director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper.

A writer and editor, Kunkel spent most of his career in newspaper management. At 29, he was the youngest executive editor in company history for Knight-Ridder's Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer. He also worked for the San Jose Mercury News, the Miami Herald, The New York Times and the Cincinnati Post. He also was editor and publisher of Arizona Trend magazine. He has written or edited five books, including "Genius in Disguise: Harold Ross of The New Yorker" (1995, Random House).

Kunkel earned his bachelor's degree in political science in 1977 and a master's degree in the humanities in 1979, both from the University of Evansville.

The Dr. N.N. Oweida Lecture in Journalism Ethics is supported by an endowment from Margaret L. Oweida in memory of her husband, the late Dr. N.N. Oweida, a surgeon from New Kensington.

Previous visitors for the lecture include: Keith Woods, dean of faculty, The Poynter Institute for Media Studies; Alex Jones, director, the Joan Shorenstein Center on the Press, Politics and Public Policy, Harvard University; Michael Getler, ombudsman, The Washington Post; and Michael Josephson, founder, the Joseph and Edna Josephson Institute of Ethics.
