Heard on Campus: Sue Paterno at the Forum

"You don't have to feel philanthropic. You give back because it is something you need to do and because a need exists. Soon enough it becomes a part of who you are."

-- Sue Paterno, community leader and philanthropist, on the topic of "Giving Back." Paterno spoke at the Penn State Faculty Staff Club Forum today (March 31) at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel. A longtime community volunteer whose credits include English tutor for student-athletes and honorary chair of the annual Centre County United Way Day of Caring as well as the first-ever National Service Week for the Penn State Alumni Association, she and her husband, Joe, are also known for their charitable giving. They were lead benefactors of University's Frank and Sylvia Pasquerilla Spiritual Center and the Paterno Library. Sue Paterno, who has volunteered for the Special Olympics of Pennsylvania for nearly two decades, and Joe will be honored May 1 with the Chairman's Choice Award at the 2008 Special Olympics Pennsylvania Hall of Fame Dinner in Philadelphia.
