Pennsylvania Legislator Discusses State Budgeting

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- John E. Barley, chair of the Appropriations Committee of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, will present a seminar on "Budgeting Pennsylvania" on Thursday, Dec. 3 at 2:30 p.m. in the Palmer Museum of Art auditorium on Penn State's University Park campus. The seminar is sponsored by the Department of Dairy and Animal Science of Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences.

Barley was chosen to chair the Appropriations Committee after 14 years of representing the 100th Legislative District in southern Lancaster County. Since 1989, he has served in various house leadership roles, including majority whip, policy chairman, caucus secretary and as a member of the House Rules Committee. In his current position, he heads the committee responsible for crafting the state budget.

Barley points out that the 1998-1999 budget, passed under his leadership in April 1998, was the earliest budget passed in 32 years. The current budget, he says, "breaks records, builds a future and creates more jobs for Pennsylvanians. As I had hoped, we cut taxes for businesses and working families of Pennsylvania. As chairman, it is my mission to ensure the citizens of our Commonwealth get the best return on their investment."

A native of Lancaster County, Barley is a fourth-generation farmer and member of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and Industry. He also serves on the Quarryville Chamber of Commerce and is on the board of the Heritage Center Museum of Lancaster County, the Evangelical School of Theology and the Heart to Heart Pregnancy Center.
