American Red Cross needs summer donors

University Park, Pa. -- The summer is slowly coming to an end but the American Red Cross still encourages all eligible donors to help save a life this season. During the summer months, collecting blood is crucial. At the moment, type O Positive and O Negative are at less than a one day supply. Shortages have an effect on our community patient needs. Hospitals rely on an adequate blood supply in order to deliver quality patient care. Red Cross officials are asking everyone to donate in the next couple of weeks.

Being in the habit of saving lives should become routine.  All it takes is a little less than one hour every 56 days (two months).  Each donation has the potential to save up to three lives. Yet, only 5 percent of the 60 percent of America’s eligible population donates.

10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 7, Pasquerilla Spiritual Center
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8, Hintz Alumni Center
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 19, Pasquerilla Spiritual Center

All donors at these three drives will receive a tie-dyed t-shirt as part of the Grateful Life Comeback Tour 2008. At Pasquerilla on August 7, the Red Cross will celebrate donors who have donated at least five gallons of blood. This blood drive is welcome to anyone who would like to donate even if he or she has not donated five gallons.

The American Red Cross is partnering with 3WZ FM 95.3, Penn State’s Earth and Mineral Sciences Graduate Student Council, Bryce Jordan Center, CiCi’s Pizza and the State College Spikes to host the 3rd Annual Blood Battle of the Ball Parks. The State College Spikes and the Altoona Curve are challenging their fans to donate blood. The team with the most fans donating blood at the 3-day blood drive competition wins the Blood Battle and the traveling trophy. The first 50 donors at each drive will receive a voucher to a Spike’s game while all presenting donors will receive CiCi’s Pizza and a chance to win Pittsburgh Pirate tickets. The Curve claimed victory in last year’s competition, but the Spikes are gearing up for a hopeful triumph this year.

From now until August 31, all presenting donors will be automatically entered for a chance to win a $2,400 gas card grand prize and five $100 gas card runner-up prizes.
