Lady Lions lose to La Roche, win home opener

The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions volleyball team finished 0-3 in the La Roche College Tournament on Sept. 6 and 7, but won its season home opener in a five-game match with the Franciscan University Lady Barons on Sept. 8.

Over the weekend Beaver was hosted and defeated by La Roche College, 3-0. A second loss followed when the Carlow University Celtics defeated Beaver, 3-0. The Lady Lions' third defeat was at the hands of the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg, 3-0.

In the weekend games, freshman Katie Landis (Rochester High School, Rochester) led the Lady Lions with 19 kills. Sophomore Brittany Clair (Seneca Valley High School, Cranberry) had 18 kills and junior Jen Hain (Northgate High School, Pittsburgh) recorded 44 assists.
On Monday, Beaver took on Franciscan, winning the first two games, 25-14 and 25-18. Games three and four, however, proved to be more difficult and Franciscan took both, 25-21 and 25-12. Beaver won the final game, 15-11.
 
Beaver sophomore Heather Sandusky (New Brighton) recorded 12 kills against Franciscan and Clair led with nine digs. Landis had the team's only block on Monday and Hain recorded 17 assists.
On Thursday, Sept. 11, Beaver was at home again but lost another three-game match-up against La Roche College, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23. Sandusky led the Lady Lions with 14 kills and 31 total attack attempts. Hain controlled the floor with 23 assists and Clair led with nine digs.

Beaver's overall record is 2-6. They begin conference play at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, when they go up against Penn State Fayette at Fayette.
