Touring Broadway musical comedy 'Hairspray' returns Oct. 23

The touring Broadway production of “Hairspray,” the musical comedy that won eight Tony Awards and inspired a major motion picture, comes to University Park at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, in Eisenhower Auditorium.
Tickets for the Center for the Performing Arts presentation are $55 and $49 for adults, $40 and $34 for University Park students and $50 and $44 for people 18 and younger. Buy tickets online at or by phone at (814) 863-0255. Outside the local calling area, dial (800) ARTS-TIX. Tickets are available at four State College locations: Eisenhower Auditorium, Penn State Tickets Downtown, HUB-Robeson Center and Bryce Jordan Center.
“Hairspray” is set in 1962. The 1950s are out and change is in the air. Tracy Turnblad, a big girl with big hair and an even bigger heart, has only one passion -- to dance. She wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show,” and overnight is transformed from outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.
The musical is based on a New Line Cinema film written and directed by John Waters, who served as a creative consultant on the stage adaptation.

Artistic Viewpoints, an informal discussion featuring a visiting artist, is offered in Eisenhower Auditorium one hour before the performance and is free for ticket holders. Artistic Viewpoints regularly fills to capacity. Seating is available on a first-arrival basis.
