Heard on Campus: Arun Gandhi

"What happened here [Tuesday] with the inauguration of President Obama is a vindication of the philosophy of non-violence. Through non-violent means a change of heart became possible and in a short period of 60 years we have elected an African-American president."

— Arun Gandhi, peace activist and grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, speaking about the work of Martin Luther King Jr. in achieving change through peace. Gandhi spoke Wednesday at Eisenhower Auditorium on the Penn State campus as the keynote speaker of the 2009 Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration. Gandhi compared the strides made in developing racial equality through non-violent advocacy to the lack of progress over the same amount of time in violent conflicts such as that between Israel and Palestine.
