Sociology faculty member publishes book chapter

Vinay Bahl, associate professor of sociology at Pennsylvania College of Technology, contributed a chapter to a recently published book.

She wrote a chapter titled “Attitude of the Indian National Congress Towards the Working Class Struggle in India: 1918-1947” for the book “National Movement in India: A Reader.” The book was edited by Sekhar Bandyopadhyay and published by Oxford University Press India in November 2008, and is scheduled to be published by Oxford University Press USA in March.

The reader provides a comprehensive discussion of the pluralist nature of the Indian nation and its struggle for independence.

Bahl has taught sociology at Penn College since 1996. She earned her doctoral degree from the State University of New York at Binghamton in 1991. In 2002-03, she was invited as a visiting scholar to the College de France, Paris. She was a visiting scholar at Amsterdam's International Institute of Asian Studies in 2004.

Bahl has published three books (one co-edited) and numerous articles on subjects that include industrialization, the working class, the caste system, the women's movement, music, South Asian women's clothes and Third World women.
