New Kensington

Baseball and softball open seasons at home; golf on the road April 7

After months of practice, a rained out opener, and under the direction of new head coaches, the Penn State New Kensington baseball and softball teams open their spring campaigns at home at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 4, with conference doubleheaders against Penn State Abington. Baseball plays at Freeport Community Park in Freeport, Pa. while softball gets underway at Elks Field in Lower Burrell, Pa. The men's and women's golf team begins its spring campaign at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 11, at Sugarloaf Golf Club in northeast Pennsylvania.

Kurt Krebs, who took over the baseball reins in February, has his coaching debut postponed March 28 when the Freeport field was deemed unplayable after the downpour the previous night. Krebs inherits a first-year team that finished the fall season with 2-10 conference record and a 2-11 overall mark. Both wins were against top-ranked Penn State Fayette. Baseball returned as an intercollegiate sport in the fall after a two-year hiatus.

The New Kensington Lady Lions are set to play an 18-game PSUAC schedule that includes four doubleheaders at Elks Field. The field has served as home to the softball team since 2002. The non-conference schedule-- March 26 at Chatham College; March 29 versus Rochester College; and April 7 at Point Park University--was cancelled. Mike Marsilli, former assistant coach at Kiski Area high School, was tapped to lead the resurgence of softball at the campus. Marsilli is a certified coach and conducts numerous clinics throughout the year.

Penn State New Kensington opens its spring golf schedule at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 7, at Sugarloaf Golf Club, located in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County, in northeast Pennsylvania.

The "Hazelton Invitational" features five Penn State campuses from the Penn State University Athletic Conference: Hazelton, Lehigh Valley, Abington, Mont Alto, and New Kensington. The New Kensington Lions three-match season includes two home matches at The Links at Spring Church in Apollo: Monday, April 20, against Lehigh Valley and Butler County Community College and Tuesday, April 28, against Westmoreland County Community College and Community College of Allegheny County-Boyce.

New Kensington is coming off a record-breaking fall season as its 19-3-1 regular season mark was the best in the history of intercollegiate golf at the campus. Highlight of the season was a victory over Penn College at the Links at Spring Church. It was Penn’s first loss in six years and 157 matches since joining the PSUAC in 2003.

Sophomore Matt Miller earned United States Collegiate Athletic Association All America honors by finishing fourth in the PSUAC/USCAA championships at University Park. Miller had a two-day total of 77-77-154 and he was also selected to the PSUAC All Conference team.
