College jazz ensemble, concert band schedule year-end performances

The Penn State Behrend Concert Band and Penn State Behrend Jazz Ensemble will hold their respective year-end performances later this month under the direction of Gary Viebranz, lecturer in music at the college.

The Jazz Ensemble’s concert will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Bruno’s Café, located on the second floor of the college’s Reed Union Building. The program includes favorites from Big Band repertoire— including “Afro Blue,” “Broadway” and “Dizzy Atmosphere”—as well as arrangements for a small jazz combo.

Organist Erik Meyer will join the Concert Band for two pieces at its annual spring concert, which will be held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, in the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel at Penn State Behrend. Meyer will accompany the student musicians in a performance of Richard Strauss’ “Feierlicher Einzug” (Solemn Entry of the Order of the Knights of St. John) and William Walton’s “Crown Imperial,” written for the 1937 coronation of King George VI.

Also on the program are Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck’s “Ballo del Granduca” and chamber compositions from Giovanni Gabrieli, Percy Grainger, Henry Purcell, and Johann Joachim Quantz.

Admission to both concerts is free and open to the public. For additional information, phone (814) 898-6289.
