William J. Zimmerman passes away

William J. Zimmerman, former area representative/director of continuing education, marketing and student affairs at Penn State Schuylkill and York campuses, passed away Jan. 28. Zimmerman began his Penn State employment in 1968 as an assistant to the dean of the College of Arts and Architecture. He retired from Penn State in 2004.

Born in Scwickley, Allegheny County, July 19, 1945, he was a son of the late Marion and Dorothy Carter Zimmerman.

Zimmerman graduated from Coraopolis High School in 1963, received his bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania State University in 1967 and did graduate work at Penn State, Johns Hopkins University and Harvard University.

Zimmerman was an assistant to the dean, College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State from 1968 to 1969. He then became the area representative for continuing education at Penn State York from 1969 to 1973.

He was director of continuing education, Penn State Schuylkill, from 1973 to 1993 and retired as the director of student affairs and marketing in 2003.

Zimmerman was a member of United Presbyterian Church, Pottsville, Pa., and served on the board of trustees and Synod. He also was a member of Pulaski Lodge 216 F&AM, Mountain City Royal Chapter 196, Regal Council 65 Royal and Select Masters, Constantine Commandry 41, Knights Templar, Ancient  Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Bloomsburg, Rajah Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, Schuylkill County Shrine Club and Pottsville Masonic Builders Club.

He was a life member of Penn State Alumni Association, Schuylkill County Chapter, Penn State Alumni Association, Yorkville Hose Fire Company No. 1, Pottsville AMVETS, Pottsville Catholic War Veterans and the Pottsville Club.

He served as a member and president of the Pottsville School District Board of Education:  a member and treasurer of the Greater Pottsville Area Sewer Authority;  a member, past president and past distinguished Lt. Governor for the Pottsville Kiwanis and District 14 and their Legion of Honor recipient;  a member of Pottsville Hospital and Warne Clinic School of Nursing Advisory Board, and a trustee of Hamburg Center, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, appointed by Governor Ed Rendell.

He is survived by his wife Cathy and daughter Kate, in her freshman year at Penn State University.
