Class of 2009 prepares to graduate

The College of Engineering will host its spring 2009 commencement ceremonies at 8 p.m. Friday, May 15, at the Bryce Jordan Center.

The college expects to bestow 631 baccalaureate degrees at Friday's ceremony.

Giving this year's commencement address is Gregory Lucier, chairman and CEO of Life Technologies, a global biotechnology tools firm. Life Technologies was established through a merger between Applied Biosystems and Invitrogen. The firm supplies tools and equipment to researchers in regenerative science, molecular diagnostics, agricultural and environmental research and 21st-century forensics.

Before the merger, Lucier was chairman and CEO of Invitrogen. From June 2000 to May 2003, he was president and CEO of General Electric Medical Systems Information Technologies.

Lucier holds a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from Penn State and an master of business administration degree from Harvard Business School.

In 2007, PharmaVoice Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Inspiring People in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
