July is 'Adult Student Month' at Penn State Fayette

Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus is focusing on adult students in July, offering extended hours and greater opportunity for one-on-one assistance with specialists in the campus’ Admissions Office.

Apryl Kadish, a Penn State Fayette admissions counselor, said there is growing interest among adults to return to college for an advanced degree.

"There are a number of factors driving the increased interest, including the economy, and we wanted to reach out in a special way to anyone wanting to learn more about higher education," she said.

However, she said the concerns of adults interested in college often differ from those of recent high school graduates.

"They have questions about what degree programs might launch them into a viable career quickly or help them advance in their current career," Kadish said. "The topic of financial aid also comes up, as does child care. We have specialists that can answer all of those questions."

Also, many adults have not been in school for many years, so they are concerned about making the transition back into the classroom.

"Penn State Fayette recognized this as an important concern of adults and we responded by developing a special ‘Bridge Program’ that can help adults get up to speed in subjects such as math and English," said Brian Fernandes, director of Enrollment and Student Services.

For convenience, Kadish said the campus is offering extended hours for adults to be able to get the information they need.

"Adult students often have jobs and family responsibilities they need to work around, so our Admissions Office will stay open late on Wednesdays in July, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m."

Throughout July the Penn State Fayette Admissions Office will also be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
