RPTM names new department head

Garry Chick, professor of recreation, park and tourism management, has been named head of Penn State’s Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Management (RPTM), effective Aug. 15. Chick will replace John Dattilo, who will remain an active part of the RPTM faculty as professor.

“We’re grateful to John for his service and we look forward to the direction Garry will provide,” said Nan Crouter, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of the College of Health and Human Development.

Chick, who has been teaching recreation and leisure studies for over 28 years, said he has “no immediate changes in mind” for the department. “I want to continue the great work that we’ve been doing,” he said.

Chick taught at the University of Illinois for over 17 years before coming to Penn State in 1999. Chick’s background is in cultural anthropology and his expertise is recognizable in the various roles he’s held in professional organizations: editor-in-chief of Leisure Sciences, president of the Association for the Study of Play, president of the Society for Cross-Cultural Research, a founding member of the Society for Anthropological Sciences and fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology.
