Foran Colon Cancer Prevention 5K raises $14,000

A record number of runners and walkers participated in the William F. Foran Colon Cancer Prevention 5K on June 13 on Harrisburg's City Island. With 420 participants in the 5K and 35 children in the Kids Fun Run, this event is the largest 5K in the south central Pennsylvania region.

Elite runner Ryan Blood captured top honors with a time of 15:15. Taking first place for the women was Mary Higgan with a time of 20:14.

The event was held in honor of William Foran, a competitive runner who bravely battled advanced colon cancer for several years following his diagnosis. Foran received multidisciplinary care, including treatment by physicians from Penn State Hershey Colon and Rectal Surgery. During that time, he continued to participate in several running events, with his supportive family with him every step of the way. His positive outlook and determination are the driving force behind this event.

The 5K is indebted to the Edward and Jeanne Arnold Charitable Trust Foundation and the Hotel Hershey for their ongoing support of this event. Next year's race will be held June 2010.
