Health Shorts: When breathlessness is an emergency

Severe shortness of breath is a 911 emergency if the victim: is blue in the face, chest or hands; can't speak more than two words between gasps; is confused, dizzy, weak or wheezing.

While waiting for arrival of an ambulance, keep the patient resting in a comfortable position, usually sitting upright. Keep the patient cool and encourage him or her to use a fast-acting inhaler if one is available. For more information regarding breathlessness, please visit Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center Health Information Library online.
