Penn State faculty to kick off home football lectures Sept. 5

University Park, Pa. -- Before their tailgate parties, Penn State football fans can feed their minds at "Huddle with the Faculty," the Alumni Association's free lecture series before all home football games held at The Nittany Lion Inn. This season's topics range from new approaches to urban poverty to the role of women in Africa to the keys to successful aging.

"Huddle with the Faculty" will kick off Sept. 5 with a presentation by Nancy Locke, associate professor of art history, who will discuss how the style and subject matter of Impressionist painting made its debut controversial and radical. The lecture, titled "The Paris of the Impressionists," will begin at 9 a.m., with a free continental breakfast available at 8:30 a.m.

The rest of this season's "Huddle with the Faculty" lineup is:
-- At 9 a.m. on Sept. 12 (Syracuse): "Teens Before Their Time: The Pressure on Young Girls to Grow Up Too Fast" with Cheryl Dellasega, professor of humanities in the College of Medicine and professor of women's studies;
-- At 9 a.m. on Sept. 19 (Temple): "The Changing Roles of Women in Africa" with Lindah Mhando, assistant professor of African and African American studies;
-- At 10 a.m. on Sept. 26 (Iowa): "Russian Law and its Impact on the Global Economy," with William E. Butler, John Edward Fowler Distinguished Professor of Law;
-- Oct. 10 (Eastern Illinois): "Urban Poverty in the U.S.: Old Problems and New Solutions," with Lakshman Yapa, professor of geography, (time TBA);
-- At 10 a.m. on Oct. 17 (Minnesota): "The Mystery of Sports Mastery," with Denise St. Pierre, Penn State women's golf coach;
-- Nov. 7 (Ohio State): "Searching for the Key to Successful Aging," with Roger McCarter, professor of biobehavioral health (time TBA); and
-- Nov. 14 (Indiana): "How China Was Introduced to the West," with Ronnie Hsia, Edwin Earle Sparks Professor of History, start time TBA.

The start time for the one-hour "Huddle with the Faculty" on each home football Saturday is 9 a.m., but is pushed back to 10 a.m. when the football game kicks off later than 3 p.m. Each "Huddle with the Faculty" also features a complimentary continental breakfast beginning 30 minutes before the lecture start time and free parking at the Nittany Parking Deck adjacent to the Inn.
