Penn State master of finance students to ring NASDAQ Opening Bell

Students in Penn State Great Valley’s Master of Finance program will ring the Opening Bell at NASDAQ Stock Market accompanied by University President Graham B. Spanier at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21. Penn State joins the many listed and nonlisted companies and trading customers that have come to the iconic NASDAQ Tower over the past 10 years to participate in the Opening and Closing Bell ceremonies. NASDAQ is the largest electronic screen-based equity securities trading market in the United States.

Beginning in December 2009 and throughout 2010, NASDAQ will be celebrating its 10-year anniversary of the MarketSite in the heart of Times Square.

Spanier, along with the finance students and invited guests, will be welcomed at NASDAQ Monday morning by market officials. Before ringing the bell, Spanier will have the opportunity to make some brief remarks to the audience. The students and invited guests will join him on stage where they will ring the bell and begin the day’s trading. The event will be broadcast live on the NASDAQ Tower, known as the largest stationary screen in the world at seven stories tall. Viewers also can see the live broadcast via global media outlets such as CNN, Fox Business News, CNBC and the Web.

Following the NASDAQ event, the finance students will tour the New York Mercantile Exchange and have the opportunity to enter the trading floor. They will return to the MarketSite at Times Square to watch a live taping of the CNBC show, “Fast Money.”

This trip to NASDAQ was arranged with the help of Walt Smith, a current master of business administration student at Penn State Great Valley and vice president of NASDAQ OMX PHLX. Smith also earned his undergraduate degree in economics from Penn State in 1995.

Field trips like this one are a hallmark of the master of finance program, an accelerated, 15-month weekend program. In October 2007, a group of finance students toured the Federal Reserve Bank in New York City and rang the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange. In March 2009, another group of students toured the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade.

The Opening Bell Ceremony itself will begin at 9:29 a.m. on Dec. 21. To watch the event live, visit online. The site, which currently has no content, will be active on the day of the event.
