Faculty member elected to telecommunications council board

Richard Taylor, professor and Palmer chair of telecommunication studies in the College of Communications, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of governors of the Pacific Telecommunications Council (PTC).

With more than 35 years of experience in telecommunications, Taylor has directed major research projects and published numerous scholarly pieces on the implications of investment in information technology on economic development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taylor serves as co-director of the Institute for Information Policy at Penn State, and as an affiliate professor in the College of Information Sciences and Technology.

In January 2009, Taylor served as co-chair of the PTC’s annual conference. Each year, PTC holds a major conference in Honolulu, at which telecommunications, information and communications professionals, educators and researchers from around the region gather for lectures, panels and workshops.

Taylor will again serve as co-chair of the program committee for PTC's 2010 conference, scheduled Jan. 17 to 20.

PTC, an international group with members from more than 60 Asia-Pacific nations, works to promote the development and use of telecommunications and information and communications technologies to enhance the lives of those living in the Pacific hemisphere. The non-profit, non-governmental organization networks with industry leaders to strengthen relationships, create partnerships, open markets, reveal resources and make a difference toward improving the quality of life in the region.

A 14 member elected board of governors leads the organization and is responsible for strategic developments. An advisory council and board of elected members provide industry experience and personal expertise to guide the organization.
