Schoepfer named a top forward prior to WPS Draft

San Francisco — Katie Schoepfer (Waterford, Conn.) has been named a top forward by Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) writers ahead of next week's 2010 WPS Draft.

The senior forward out of Connecticut, who leaves Penn State as one of the finest scorers in program history, was named in the top five by two WPS writers and mentioned by two others prior to the WPS Draft on Thursday, Jan. 15. The draft will begin at 10 a.m. at the NSCAA Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.

Schoepfer was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year after a career year en route to a NSCAA Third Team All-America honor, her second All-America selection. Schoepfer capped her career with 14 goals, nine assist and a career- and team-best 37 points.

She twice scored hat tricks this past season in games against Illinois (10/25) and Colgate (11/13), becoming only the third Nittany Lion, after Christie Welsh and Tiffany Weimer) to score multiple hat tricks in a career. In the final 12 games, Schoepfer tallied 32 points behind 13 goals and six assists.

Schoepfer will be joined by fellow All-American senior Alyssa Naeher (Seymour, Conn.) at the NSCAA Convention to receive national awards and be in attendance for Thursday's draft.
