Lady Lions hold Special Olympics clinic

University Park, Pa. -- Two groups of athletes - Special Olympians and the Lady Lions basketball team - filled the Bryce Jordan Center practice gym on Saturday, Jan. 9, as the Special Olympians participated in hands-on basketball skills and drills sessions led by the Lady Lions.

More than two dozen such athletes rotated between three parts of the facility's practice gym, taking part in skills activities organized by the players and coaching staff. Participants worked on fundamentals including dribbling, shooting, defending, passing and rebounding, and received feedback and individual help from members of the women's basketball program. In addition, Special Olympics coaches worked with Penn State coaching staff on additional coaching techniques.

The team, which hosted the event as part of its tradition for community outreach and service, welcomed the Special Olympics athletes, who came from Centre and Blair counties for the event. Before the clinic, participants were able to watch the Lady Lions team practice. Clinic participants also were invited to watch the Lady Lions in their return to the Bryce Jordan Center on Sunday, Jan. 10, for the team's noon game against Indiana.
