Penn State Habitat for Humanity Spring Break Opportunity

University Park, Pa. -- On March 5, 119 Penn State students will shelve their books, grab their sunscreen and hammers and help the fight against substandard housing. Students looking for an opportunity to travel south and work with local Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the Southeastern United States should join the Collegiate Challenge. Students will build not only homes for low income families but also lasting relationships with both fellow Penn State students in addition to other college students. Students work on all aspects of the building process including framing, roofing, siding, painting, or even demolition. Spots are still available for all University Park students for this year’s trip from March 6-14.

Habitat for Humanity provides opportunities to low income families to receive standardize housing at extremely low rates. The families also learn throughout the program how to better manage their income and restructure their lives. The program has helped so many families and cannot operate without the help of volunteers. Collegiate Challenge is a chance to escape the monotony of school work and do something truly meaningful while having a fun time.

Trips this year include four going to Florida, two going to Georgia, and one going to New Orleans. Students drive down in rental vans and stay in local community centers or volunteer centers throughout the week. All trips go for the entire week of Spring Break. Students have the chance to build during the day and explore Southern culture in the evenings. It is truly a great experience and a cheap alternative to other Spring Break options.

To obtain an application please visit the forms section of the Penn State Habitat Web site. General meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays in 373 Willard. Additional office hours are from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sundays in 310 HUB-Robeson Center. Also if you have any further questions or concerns please contact Dan O’Neill at pennstatehabitat@gmail.com.
