Smeal professor testifies before Congress on Iran policy

University Park, Pa. – Fariborz Ghadar, director of the Center for Global Business Studies at Penn State's Smeal College of Business, testified before the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee's Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia, regarding the implications of U.S. policies on Iran, on Feb. 3.

Ghadar cautioned against broad U.S. sanctions against Iran and recommended a more nuanced approach that takes aim at entities of Iran's Revolutionary Guard "while promoting information flows and economic activities with the private sector." This strategy, Ghadar said, will protect the Iranian public while targeting paramilitary interests.

A transcript of Ghadar's testimony is available on Smeal's Research with Impact Web site. Archived video of the complete hearing, titled "America and the Iranian Political Reform Movement: First, Do No Harm," is available on the Foreign Affairs Committee's Web site.

Ghadar, who also is the William A. Schreyer professor of global management, policies and planning at Smeal, was born in Iran and held a vice-ministerial post there during the Shah's regime. He is a leading authority on future business trends, global economic assessment, international finance and banking and global corporate strategy and implementation.
