UHS staff member receives mentor of the year award

Cathy Stout, assistant to the director at University Health Services (UHS), has received the 2009 Mentor of the Year award from the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) Alumni Mentoring Program. Stout was nominated for the award by her mentee, HHD senior Andrea Edwards, who presented Stout with the award at the department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA) Mentoring Program Dinner on Feb. 27.

This was Stout's first year participating in the program, in which nearly 300 students are paired with alumni working in their field of interest.

"The program is a chance for alumni to share their practical work experiences, build relationships and make an impact on the student's life," Stout said. Stout, a 1995 HPA graduate, joined the mentoring program to give students the guidance she never had. "When I was in school, I was focused solely on administration. When I got out, I saw there was a lot more than just management that makes a company work. As a mentor, I want to help guide students to keep their options open and look at the broad range of optional classes available."

She was matched with Edwards based on their shared interest in HPA.

"We met on a monthly basis for about a year, picking classes, working on her resume, job shadowing, just getting together to talk about career options," Stout said. She even wrote Edwards a letter of recommendation which guided Edwards into a summer internship with UHS.

"Since I just completed my first year in the program, I was humbled to be selected as the recipient of this award," Stout said. She looks forward to continuing her service to future students in the Alumni Mentoring Program.
