Rock Ethics Institute honors award recipients

On Sunday, April 25, the Rock Ethics Institute at Penn State held a ceremony and reception to honor recipients of the Stand Up Award and finalists in the Ethics Film/Video Competition.

The Stand Up Award, now in its third year, honors Penn State undergraduate students who have the courage to take an ethical stand for a person, a cause or belief, and thereby demonstrate ethical leadership through personal example. 2010 honorees are:

  • --Stephen Lucas, class of 2010, English, Penn State University Park, for his courage in standing up for marginalized and underrepresented communities.
  • -- Sarah O’Donald, class of 2010, human development and family studies, and women’s studies, Penn State University Park, for her development of Knitivism, a student group that uses knitting in peaceful demonstrations against violence and oppression.
  • -- Peggy Styles, class of 2011, Human Development and Family Studies, Penn State Shenango, for her tireless efforts helping the women of her community heal from the pain and suffering associated with loss.

The Ethics Film/Video Competition, introduced this year, encourages students to engage their creativity and ethical sensitivities by producing short films/videos on an ethical issue or one that enhances our appreciation of the importance of being ethical. Students who created the award-winning films are:

  • -- Lainey Lee, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Our Landfill" and "Plugged In, Tuned Out."
  • -- Jenny Lubkin, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Our Landfill" and "Ten Little Indians."
  • -- Megan Powell, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Ten Little Indians."
  • -- Christopher Rizzo, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Ten Little Indians."
  • -- Marley Stellmann, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Healthcareless," "Oil Crisis" and "Ten Little Indians."
  • -- Lindsay Stork, class of 2010, Graphic Design, Penn State University Park, "Under the Influence."
