Farmers market to provide local, fresh products for staff, students

Local, fresh, sustainable -- the Farmers Market in Hershey opens this week for its inaugural season. Founded by two Penn State College of Medicine faculty members and supported by the Hershey Trust, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts, the Hershey Center for Applied Research, and Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and College of Medicine, the market will open every Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Each week, customers may peruse a wide selection of locally produced fruits and vegetables, dairy products, meats and baked goods, and other specialty items such as herbs and spices, canned or preserved goods, flowers, cider, and honey, and share in supporting local agriculture. Most products are organic or naturally produced and originate within a 25-mile radius of the market.

While the Farmers Market in Hershey offers healthy, locally grown foods, its mission runs deeper. The market was founded to:

  • Provide a community venue for health and wellness education;
  • Support local farmers who engage in sustainable practices;
  • Foster community among employees and students of the Medical Center and residents of the surrounding communities; and
  • Pay homage to the agricultural heritage of the land.

The market will eventually feature innovative wellness programming, including cooking classes, free health screenings, health education and musical performances by community members.

The market is conveniently located just west of the Medical Center campus, between the Englewood Barn and the Cocoa Beanery at 1215 Research Blvd., off of Bullfrog Valley Road. Customers may park in the parking lot for the Hershey Center for Applied Research, located next to the market.

Medical Center and College of Medicine employees, students, patients and visitors are encouraged to make the 1/2-mile walk to the market. Bike racks are available next to the Cocoa Beanery, and the West Campus shuttle stops at the research center and farmers market site.
