Welcome Week activities begin Friday for Penn State students

University Park, Pa. -- Welcome Week 2010, "Discover. Engage. Grow.," encourages new and returning Penn State students to discover Penn State, engage themselves in the Penn State community and grow as students and individuals. Events, occurring throughout the University Park campus, include:

Friday, Aug. 20
9 p.m. Union and Student Activities Movie and Craft Night
Looking for something to do? Grab your roommates and head to the HUB-Robeson Center to see How to Train Your Dragon in the HUB Auditorium or enjoy crafts and games on the ground floor.

Saturday, Aug. 21
6 - 7 p.m. Commuter Connection (Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center)
All new, first-year, undergraduate students who will be commuting from home or living off-campus are cordially invited to attend this reception. Meet members of the Off-Campus Student Union (OCSU) and other commuting students and learn tips for college success and strategies to acclimate to the University Park community. Walk together to the President’s New Student Convocation at the Bryce Jordan Center.

9 p.m. - 1 a.m. SPA LateNight-Penn State (HUB-Robeson Center and White Building)
Be sure to head to the HUB-Robeson Center and the White Building after the President’s New Student Convocation. Enjoy comedy shows, movies, music, crafts, variety and novelty events, games, caricatures, videokie, funny photos, recreation, and more.

Sunday, Aug. 22
10:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. Change-of-Campus & Transfer Student Orientation (Alumni Hall, HUB-Robeson Center)
All new change-of-campus and transfer students are invited to attend this program. Learn tips for success from change-of-campus and transfer student leaders, meet staff, and connect with other new students. Lunch and information packets will be provided. Please register via e-mail to saj6@psu.edu.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m. First Sunday: Open House at the Pasquerilla Center (Pasquerilla Center)
The Center for Ethics and Religious Affairs invites you to an open house at The Pasquerilla Spiritual Center, the largest multi-faith facility of its kind in the country. Enjoy free refreshments while meeting new students, discovering diverse spiritual/religious organizations on campus, identifying supportive campus resources, and learning about interfaith programs and opportunities.

5: 30 - 7 p.m. Multicultural Resource Center and Paul Robeson Cultural Center Fall Orientation for new multicultural students (Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center)
This program gives all new undergraduate multicultural students at University Park the opportunity to become familiar with academic and co-curricular resources available on campus.

8 – 9 p.m. Be a Part from the Start (Rec Hall)
Be a Part from the Start is your chance to learn about Penn State pride. Come learn the Alma Mater, the fight songs, and great Penn State traditions with the Lion Ambassadors, the Blue Band, members of Penn State’s athletic squads, the cheerleaders, the dance team, and the Nittany Lion. Sponsored by the Lion Ambassadors, the Penn State Alumni Association, and Residence Life.

Monday, Aug. 23
8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Campus Information Stations
Need to locate an academic building? Feeling a bit turned around? Look no further than these conveniently located “Information Stations.” Volunteers can point you in the right direction as well as provide you with a campus map. For your convenience, four (4) Information Stations are located (1) outside the HUB on Pollock Road, (2) by the Willard Building on Pollock Road, (3) next to the Forum along Curtin Road, and (4) near the Creamery.

11a.m. – 4 p.m. Involvement Days: Student organizations and campus resources (Alumni Hall and Heritage Hall, HUB-Robeson Center)
Make the most of your Penn State career -- get involved. Participating in Involvement Days is a great way to connect with student organizations, campus resources, community service and volunteer opportunities, and Greek Life. Involvement Days are held Monday through Thursday with different groups each day. With over 800 student organizations, there is something for everyone!. Enjoy music, win prizes and have fun.

1 - 4 p.m. LGBTA Student Resource Center open house (101 Boucke Building)
Come by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Ally (LGBTA) Student Resource Center to meet the staff, find out about LGBTA resources and student groups, meet new people and enjoy refreshments.

This program gives all new transfer and change of campus undergraduate multicultural students (Black/African American, Asian and Pacific American, Hispanic/Latino American and Native American) an opportunity to meet their MRC counselor as well as interact with former transfer students as they share valuable suggestions and strategies that ensure social engagement and academic success at University Park. Refreshments will be provided. Sponsored by the Multicultural Resource Center.

7 - 8:30p.m. Drunk sex or date rape: Can you tell the difference? (HUB Auditorium)
Brett Sokolow is a higher education attorney who specializes in sexual misconduct and campus security. Brett draws on his legal experience to facilitate this interactive jury exercise where the audience "hears" a trial based on a real sexual assault case. Sponsored by the Center for Women Students.

Wednesday, Aug. 25
11a.m.  - 4 p.m. Involvement Days: Volunteer fair (Alumni Hall, Hub-Robeson Center)
Interested in becoming an active member of the Happy Valley community? This fair features volunteer and community service activities on campus and in the local State College community. Enjoy great music, and free prizes.

4:30 - 5:15 p.m. Study Abroad 101: It’s for everyone (410 Boucke)
Sponsored by Global Programs, Study Abroad 101 is an informative peer-to-peer presentation on the basics about studying abroad. After attending a Study Abroad 101 session students will have a general understanding on: program types and duration; types of courses available; housing opportunities; financial aid resources and program costs; application and advising process; access of the education abroad resource room and website; developing into a global citizen.

Make a difference in the community. The 2009 Fresh START Day of Service for first-year, change of campus, and transfer students is an opportunity to meet new people and get involved in the community. The purpose of Fresh START is to encourage new students to “get rooted” with service opportunities during their academic careers at Penn State, University Park, not just for the day but for a lifetime. Along with receiving a free t-shirt and free food, you will receive information about other service opportunities following the day of service. Registration for this event begins Thursday, Aug. 19 at www.volunteers.psu.edu.
