Symposium aims to improve sustainability in the hospitality industry

The School of Hospitality Management (SHM) is holding an event designed to reduce waste and increase sustainability practices in the hotel, waste and food service industries. The SHM Sustainability Symposium will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at The Nittany Lion Inn, and will be followed by a light reception.

“There are so many people and companies that want to be sustainable, but do not know what resources are available to them,” said David Cranage, associate professor of hospitality management, who is leading the event. “We hope to help the hotel and food service industry connect with farmers, recyclers, waste authorities, composting facilities, Penn State personnel, centers, institutes, departments and other organizations for help and information. Ultimately, we would like to foster local sustainable communities.”

Topics to be covered include Penn State sustainability initiatives, waste streams, local sourcing and facilities/energy best practices. Conference attendees will include hospitality industry personnel; Pennsylvania farmers; Pennsylvania recyclers; representatives from Penn State’s colleges of Health and Human Development, Agriculture and Engineering; and representatives from Penn State’s Office of the Physical Plant and the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment.
