Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute offers free screening

Many of the most crippling and lethal vascular complications can be effectively prevented and cured with early detection, diagnosis and treatment. Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute will be offering a free vascular screening 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23. Participants must be 65 years of age or older and have a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking or a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

During the screening, nurses and vascular lab technicians will complete a vascular report card for each patient. Before each patient leaves, he will have an opportunity to review his report card with a vascular surgeon, to discuss any concerns or questions.

While heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in America, vascular disease outside the heart can lead to stroke, rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysms, and peripheral artery disease (PAD), which can lead to difficulty walking and other serious problems like heart attack and stroke.

The screenings, conducted in the Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute in the north hallway on the first floor of the Medical Center, will include blood pressure check, carotid artery duplex, screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm, and ankle brachial index.

Although the screening is free of charge, registration is required and limited. To register, please call the CareLine at 800-243-1455.
