University Park, Pa. — Growing older is an inevitable part of life. With age comes wisdom, maturity and many life-changing events. Whether it is retirement or illness, these experiences bring about a variety of mental, physical and social changes. Despite all of this, we have the ability to create a positive process to age well.
Penn State President Graham Spanier and his guests, Steven Zarit and Martin Sliwinski, will discuss healthy aging on the upcoming edition of "To the Best of My Knowledge."
The live call-in program will air at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 7, on WPSU-TV and WPSU-FM. It also airs on the Pennsylvania Cable Network (PCN).
Steven Zarit is a professor and head of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Penn State. Zarit’s research focuses on aging issues pertaining to the elderly, which include care giving, health and function. In 2009, Zarit received the Distinguished Career Award in the Behavioral and Social Sciences Section by the Gerontological Society of America. He has also served as an American editor for Aging and Mental Health and as the chair for the Gerontological Society of America’s Publications Task Force.
Martin Sliwinski is a professor of human development and family studies and the director of the Gerontology Center at Penn State. Sliwinski’s research interests include aging, stress and working memory. He has received more than 15 years of continuous funding from the National Institute on Aging, which has contributed to his vast experience in gerontology, statistics and psychology. Sliwinski is also the editor of Aging, Neuropsychology and Cognition.
