IST THON pushing toward $10K fundraising goal

In an effort to raise at least $5,000 before the semester's end, the College of Information Sciences and Technology's (IST) THON is hosting its first Chili Cook-Off, sponsored by SRA International, beginning at 4 p.m. Dec. 9. The event will continue until all the chili is gone.

“This year we decided to completely reboot IST’s THON initiative,” IST THON Executive Chair Russ Beck said. “We wanted a fresh start to something we believe should be a priority for IST going forward.”

The event will be held in Reese’s Café in the IST Building. To enter, participants should bring their “killer” chili recipes in a crock pot or something to keep it warm for a few hours, Beck said. It will cost $5 to eat and judge the chili creations.

So far this year, IST THON’s fundraising has been “phenomenally successful,” and the group has high goals. Beck said they’d like to raise $10,000 by THON weekend in February.

“I would say we are on a good pace but need a solid final push in January to complete it,” he said.

The group, which hadn’t been very active the past two years, is now at a consistent membership of 20 to 40 members, Beck said. IST THON also has had more events this semester than the past two years combined.

Next semester, he said they have several big events planned including a date auction, silent auction and video game tournament.
