Michael Evans, a nursing instructor at Penn State Worthington Scranton, has written an article that has been accepted for publication in a national nursing journal.
The article, "Evidence-Based Practice Protcol to Improve Glucose Control in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus," was inspired by Evans’ graduate work at Misericordia University. It was his final synthesis (evidence-based) project required for graduation.
“I chose to do the project on diabetes, as it personally affects me and over 23 million individuals in the U.S.,” Mr. Evans said.
The results of the study showed clinical significance, as blood glucose control was improved in the intervention group.
Although this was a small study and further research is needed, the study supports the use of nurse-led, follow-up phone call interventions to improve glycemic control in individuals with Type 2 diabetes.
This is a significant finding, as follow-up phone call interventions are not currently part of standard care for individuals with type 2 diabetes and in the future, it is likely that medical reimbursements will depend on quality health care outcomes, Evans explained.
The article appeared in the November/December issue of MEDSURG Nursing: The Journal of Adult Health, a highly respectable journal in the area of adult health.
MEDSURG Nursing is the official journal of the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN). It is a peer-reviewed publication that features a comprehensive discussion and description of current clinical issues in adult health/medical surgical nursing practice. It is published six times annually.
Evans received his associate degree in nursing from Penn State Worthington Scranton in 2002; his bachelor’s degree in nursing from Penn State in 2003, and a master’s degree in nursing, with a specialization in adult health and a sub-specialization in nursing education, from Misericordia University in 2008.
He is currently a doctoral student at Capella University’s School of Education. His current research interests include innovate teaching strategies to improve clinical judgment in nursing students and nursing interventions to improve glycemic control in individuals with diabetes.
He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists and the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses, as well as the American Nurses Association and the American Diabetes Association.
