Penn State approves architect for IM Building expansion, renovation

University Park, Pa. -- Penn State’s Board of Trustees Friday (Jan. 21) approved the appointment of Moody Nolan Inc., of Columbus, Ohio, as architects for the 48,000-square-foot expansion and partial renovation of the Intramural Building on Penn State’s University Park campus.

“We are planning to upgrade the Intramural Building as part of our strategy to meet student demand for fitness and recreation facilities at Penn State,” said Al Horvath, the University’s senior vice president for Finance and Business/treasurer. "Our vision is a facility that emulates the qualities of the recently completed fitness center at Rec Hall on Atherton Street."

The project will not preclude further expansion of the IM Building in the future, should the need arise, he said.

The 117,000-square-foot building, located at the intersection of Curtin Road and University Drive, serves as one of three primary fitness centers on campus along with the White Building and the Rec Hall.

Moody Nolan’s previous work includes the design of the Student Recreation Center at the University of Illinois at Springfield, in Springfield, Ill.; the Kress Events Center at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, in Green Bay, Wis.; and the Student Recreation Center at the University of Akron, in Akron, Ohio.
