Penn State Hershey Health System showcases awards and honors

To recognize the achievements of faculty, staff, students and volunteers at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and Penn State College of Medicine, the following list of appointments, awards and honors that may be of public interest has been compiled for the quarter of Oct. 1 to Dec. 31, 2010.

Appointments

Gleeson to head Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care

Kevin Gleeson, professor of medicine, has been named chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. Gleeson came to Penn State Hershey Medical Center as a fellow in Pulmonary Medicine in 1984 and joined the faculty in 1987. He was promoted to associate professor of medicine in 1994 and professor of medicine in 2002. Gleeson’s research has focused on the control of breathing during sleep and the causes of obstructive sleep apnea.

Mets tapped to lead anesthesia associations

Berend Mets, Eric A. Walker professor and chairman of anesthesiology, has been named president of the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Associations. He also was selected as president of the Association of Academic Anesthesiology Chairmen at the group’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C. Mets has served on the board of directors and as secretary/treasurer for each association. He will serve as president of each for the next two years.

Shantz named project manager for Woodward Endowment

Lisa M. Shantz has been appointed project manager for The Woodward Endowment for Medical Science Education. Shantz is an associate professor in the Department of Cellular and Molecular Physiology. Her research interests center on molecular mechanisms of skin carcinogenesis. Shantz is a lecturer in both the medical school and graduate school curriculums, a member of the Genetics Program Executive Committee, the Graduate Student Recruiting Committee for the physiology program, and the Fellowship Review Committee for applicants to various graduate departments and programs. Programs supported by the Woodward Endowment enhance excellence in medical science education at the College of Medicine and Medical Center by strengthening the educational mission and adding value to the clinical and research missions of the institution.

Awards and Honors

El-Deiry earns international award for cancer disease work

Wafik S. El-Deiry, chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology and associate director for translational research at the Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, was awarded the Kuwait Prize in Applied Sciences. The honor is presented by the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences (KFAS) and recognizes intellectual achievements in science. El-Deiry received this international award in the Applied Sciences field for his accomplishments in cancerous disease research, including his work on gene mechanisms that determine cancer therapeutic response and new strategies targeting cell death for cancer therapy.

Shenberger receives FEVR award

Jeffrey S. Shenberger, was presented with the Penn State Hershey Eye Center’s Frontiers in Eye and Vision Research (FEVR) award for 2010. Shenberger is an associate professor of pediatrics and cellular and molecular physiology. He was recognized for his work to discover the cause of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a disease affecting premature infants. Of the most severely affected babies, nearly 500 become legally blind each year. FEVR awards are presented by the Penn State Hershey Eye Center to promote collaborative basic science, clinical/translational, and educational research throughout Penn State’s eye and vision research community.
