University Park, Pa. – Claudio Frumento, information systems consultant in the College of Agricultural Sciences, has been named the 2011 Staff Excellence Award winner.

Established in 1993, the award recognizes the consistently outstanding performance of a staff member who has demonstrated and practiced the philosophy of continuous quality improvement, team spirit, managerial excellence in the performance of assigned duties and leadership in establishing a quality service orientation, so as to benefit his or her unit and the University.

In his role as a systems administrator for the Department of Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology (AERS), Frumento, along with his co-workers, manages the department's computer network, oversees two student lab facilities and provides ongoing technical support for some 60 faculty and staff members and 70 graduate students.

According to one nominator, "His impressive knowledge, coupled with an unparalleled service orientation, and extraordinary commitment to continuously enhancing the effectiveness of the work unit and helping it deal with unexpected circumstances, make him a critically important and valued member of our staff. I have often heard the comment from faculty and staff that they would like to clone him."

In addition to hardware and software management, maintenance and personal consultation, Frumento participates in long-range strategic planning related to technology policies and practices. He also organizes and teaches workshops for incoming graduate students to acquaint them with the computer facilities available to them through the University and AERS.

From 2003 to 2006, he served on the Staff Advisory Committee to the dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences, and was elected committee chair in 2004.
