Waring Dining Commons gets sweet with potatoes

While some students traded chocolates and candy over Valentine's Day week, many students found their sweets at Waring Dining Commons. That's because it was sweet potato week.

Penn State students took part in a fun and sweet promotion at the West Halls dining area from Feb. 14 to 20. The event was a promotion sponsored by the North Carolina Sweet Potato Board to expose students to all things sweet potato.

The sweet potato board gave Penn State $1,600 to run five days of promotions during lunch and dinner. New menu items included sweet potato soup, scalloped sweet potatoes, sweet potato crepes, sweet potato smoothies, sweet potato casserole and more.

"We are all about finding opportunities to give students fun stuff," Director of Residential Dining Lisa Wandel said. "The board provides the money to run these promotions, so they come at no extra cost to students."

Some fun activities that students enjoyed included sweet potato quiz games, Mr. Sweet Potato Head contest, tic-tac-"tatoe" and more. Past Campus Dining promotions have highlighted blueberries, local meats, local produce and Hershey chocolate.

"We like to offer promotions like this," Jo-Ann Marker, campus dining special projects manager, said. "I think the sweet potato board was impressed and will be back."
