Faculty, staff to be honored at PSEAS awards on April 1

The College of Engineering will honor its faculty and staff April 1 at the 2011 Penn State Engineering Alumni Society (PSEAS) Awards ceremony, held at 1:30 p.m. in Kunkle Lounge on Penn State's University Park campus.

The eight awards recognize outstanding efforts in teaching, research, advising, staff, service and work with students.

Four faculty members will receive the Outstanding Teaching Award: Rachel Brennan, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering; Seungjin Kim, assistant professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering; Jon Carson, associate professor of engineering at Penn State Wilkes-Barre; and Robert "Doc" Mueller, associate professor of engineering at Penn State New Kensington.

The Outstanding Research Award will be presented to Aman Haque, associate professor of mechanical engineering, and Tony Huang, associate professor of engineering science and mechanics.

The Outstanding Advising Award will be presented to four faculty members: Irene Ferrara, senior instructor of engineering at Penn State Altoona; Melissa Marshall, faculty adviser for the Engineering Ambassadors; Soundar R. T. Kumara, Allen E./Allen M. Pearce professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering; and M. Kevin Parfitt, associate professor of architectural engineering.

Three faculty members will receive the Outstanding Staff Award this year: Michael C. Immel, director of corporate relations and facilities in industrial and manufacturing engineering; Juls Kralik, administrative support assistant in nuclear engineering; and Christine A. Wilson, associate coordinator of grants and contracts in the dean's office.

The Premier Teaching Award will go to Sean Brennan, associate professor of mechanical engineering.

Kenji Uchino, professor of electrical engineering, will receive the Premier Research Award.

The Distinguished Service Award will go to two recipients: Thomas A. Litzinger, director of the Leonhard Center and professor of mechanical engineering, and G. Thomas Sheffer, alumni advisory board member and 1964 engineering science and mechanics alumnus.

The Lawrence J. Perez Memorial Student Advocate Award will be given to Peter Butler, associate professor of bioengineering.
