Abington's Kids and Teen College summer camp open house

School kids are finding themselves just a couple of short weeks away from the start of summer vacation. What will fill the long, lazy days of that teen or tween? Will they become couch potatoes and television zombies, accomplishing little more than becoming the highest scorers of their favorite video games? Or will they seek something beyond the sofa to stimulate and enrich their days? Find the answer at Penn State Abington's Kids and Teen College open house between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday, May 14 in Lares Building. Potential participants can discover what camps are new, have their questions answered and enjoy the picturesque campus. Children are welcome to attend and participate in fun activities.

Abington's Kids and Teen College offers fun, enriching, and educational week long programs for students entering grades three through 12. Many camps are aligned with the Pennsylvania STEM initiative -- a statewide effort dedicated to preparing the Commonwealth for global competitiveness through a strategy of enhanced science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and career development opportunities for Pennsylvania students and communities.

Penn State Abington is pleased to offer a wide range of youth programs that focus on many different subject areas.

“Exploring Engineering,” “Rocking with Rocketry” or “Robotics” should satisfy that budding engineer. If science is the child’s interest than perhaps "You be the Chemist," "Crime Scene Investigation," “Summer Science Camp," “Summer Bug Camp,” or the new “Write On with Science” would move them off that couch. Get them out in the fresh air with “Geocaching Adventure,” “Backyard Ecology,” or “Survivor Penn State.” If getting fit is the goal this summer than they can check out “Summer Olympics,” “Basketball,” “Fit Fest,” or “Ninja Warriors.” One of those camps will surely be the perfect fit. And don’t forget to check out the arts, literature, public speaking and college prep programs Penn State Abington has to offer as well.

While students with special needs are invited to attend any youth and teen summer camps, Penn State Abington offers specifically designed summer camps for students with Asperger Syndrome, ADD, ADHD, and other non-verbal learning disabilities. Camps include "Music Gone Green," "Basketball Camp" and "You Can Be a Superstar Social Skills Camp."

"The students have such a great time on campus during the summer and it is very impressive how much they learn each week, all while having fun," said Deanna Bosley, coordinator of Penn State Abington's summer camp program. "Being on a college campus is such a great experience for the kids. A weeklong camp or two is a good way to supplement their summer by providing them a more mature experience in a collegiate atmosphere."
